Students may opt to temporarily or permanently withdraw from the University when personal circumstances beyond their control make it impossible for them to attend required classes and/or complete assigned coursework for the semester they are enrolled in.

A student wishing to withdraw from the University must complete and submit the University of Reston Institutional Withdraw Form, obtainable from the Office of the Registrar or through online download. To do so, students will need to obtain required signatures from relevant faculty and school administrators.

Students have the right to cancel their request for withdrawal within three (3) business days following the date it was officially submitted.

All in-state, out-of-state, transfer and international students who select to temporarily or permanently withdraw from the University in a given semester will receive a grade of “W” on their unofficial and official transcripts for all the courses they did not complete if the following conditions are met:

  • They withdraw between the second and tenth weeks of the semester for courses with fifteen (15) week schedules.
  • They withdraw between the second and fifth weeks of the semester for courses with eight (8) week schedules.
  • They withdraw between the second and fourth weeks of the semester for courses with seven (7) week schedules.
  • All such students who do not withdraw from the University before the above stated deadlines will receive a failing grade, or a letter grade based upon his or her performance in the course(s) prior to their departure.

Following notification of a student’s intention to withdraw and the passing of the mandatory three (3) day cancellation waiting period, the appropriate staff will utilize the University’s institutional refund policy to: 1) determine if that student is entitled to a refund of tuition or other fees, and if so, 2) ensure that the student receives the refund due them in a timely matter.

In addition to the above types of student-requested withdrawals, matriculated student’s acceptance into the University, failure to register/enroll in certain courses results in academic suspension/probation for that semester, and if such non-registration/non-enrollment continues in future semester, eventual withdrawal from the University.
