Matriculated students who have successfully completed at least one semester at the University of Reston and meet other eligibility requirements, may participate, at no cost, in one or more of the various academic leadership development programs offered by the university.
Because many successful student leaders around the world have become industry or government trailblazers after graduation, the university’s administration strongly promotes the development of student academic leadership skills through two organized programs:
University of Reston Campus Leaders Forum is an on-campus networking group comprised of students, university faculty and staff, and community/industry leaders. Meetings are held on a scheduled basis to provide student participants with personal and professional guidance on vital leadership topics through mentorship as well as presentations given by dynamic speakers drawn from diverse professional backgrounds. Students are eligible to participate in this forum upon successful completion of at least one semester at the University of Reston with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and who can commit to attend at least three scheduled forum events during one academic year.
University of Reston Student Academic Leadership Certificate is a five (5) course (15 credit hours total), certificate program emphasizing leadership knowledge acquisition, development of practical leadership skills, and sustained experience publicly demonstrating leadership within the local community. This program is open to those students who have successfully completed at least one semester at the University of Reston with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and available to attend the required courses and participate in assigned external learning activities.
To earn this certificate, accepted students must continue to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA in their degree program, satisfactorily complete all of this certificate’s leadership-related courses and participate in all assigned external (i.e. outside of the classroom) learning experiences. Several certificate courses are offered each semester to make it possible for students to complete the certificate within one academic year, if desired.
While the pass/fail academic credits earned toward this certificate will not be counted in a student’s individual semester GPA or in their CGPA for their academic degree, the university will acknowledge and honor all students who earn this certificate during the school’s Commencement Ceremonies, along with permanently listing their names on the school’s website under the Student Leaders tab.
Note: Other students – with at least one semester of successful academic experience at the 3.0 GPA level or higher and interested in further developing their leadership skills through active participation in classroom learning activities – may be allowed to audit one or more of The University of Reston Student Academic Leadership Certificate courses without receiving academic credits for them or formally earning this certificate.
