Appointments
- Appointments with your academic advisor should be made online.
- Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate same-day appointments.
Express Advising
- Express advising is available weekdays during the academic year from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.
- Express advising is reserved for “quick questions,” clarification on forms, and quick reference information.
- Student records cannot be reviewed during express advising, and the following issues cannot be addressed: degree audits, balance sheets, planning for study abroad, or anything requiring more than 5-10 minutes of discussion.
Advising During First Weeks of Classes & Registration
The busiest times in the Academic Advising office take place during the first two weeks of the semester and the registration periods. During these times, standard appointments and express advising are suspended and replaced with the following advising options:
Quick Start Advising
Quick Start Advising takes place during the first two weeks of the Fall and Spring semesters.
All academic advisors are available on a first-come, first-served basis between the hours of 10:00 am-12:00 pm and 2:00 pm-4:00 pm during this time. Students can meet with the first available advisor or their assigned advisor (though selecting this option can result in longer wait times). Questions are not limited to “short questions;” meetings may take longer than ten minutes (but will not exceed thirty minutes); and advisors have full access to student records.
Registration Advising
Registration Advising takes place during registration periods in early November and late March/early April (see the Registrar’s website for registration dates).

Peer Advising
The University of Reston also utilizes peer advisors.
What Advisors Do
While students are responsible for determining their schedule and meeting all degree requirements, Academic Advisors are here to guide students through the entire degree. An Academic Advisor can help you:
- Choose your courses
- Prepare an academic plan
- Plan an internship (for credit or zero credit)
- Choose a secondary field of study
- Explore extracurricular opportunities
- Check your progress toward graduation
